The earliest mention of meditation (from Latin meditari: to reflect, to think, to contemplate) is found in the Vedas (1700-1100 BC), the ancient Hindu sacred texts, which use Dhyāna, the Sanskrit word for “vision”. In the following centuries there appeared several commentaries to the Vedas, known as Upanishads or Vedanta (the end of the Vedas), as well as epic poems like the Mahābhārata, which includes the Bhagavadgītā (300 BC).
