Since mid of last century findings of paramount importance have progressively clarified the underlying causes of obesity and the understanding of body weight regulation as a crosstalk between periphery and brain. Aim of the present review is not to exhaustively describe these findings but to put research on obesity in an historical perspective and provide the reader with a sense on how the main systems regulating energy homeostasis work in the context of their adaptive role.
