“Facts and theories are natural enemies”. This extraordinary statement was utilised in a somewhat self deprecatory way by Douglas R. Wilkie (1922-1998) in a 1974 paper to comment on his own considerations on thermodynamics and the efficiency of muscle contraction. I have taken the liberty of applying Wilkie’s dictum to other matters, again dealing with thermodynamics.
