The placenta is a transient and often poorly regarded organ. The little consideration given this organ derives from the fact that it is discarded at birth and people live their whole lives without it. Thus, we attribute no utility to its existence. We now know, however, that the many functions of this organ during prenatal life strongly influence the health of the adult to which it was once attached.
