I am very grateful to the publishers and the scientific coordinators of this prestigious journal for entrusting me with the task of recalling, as well as commenting on, the results of some pioneering observations of Angelo Mosso, over a century after his death, on muscle function and, in particular, on some fundamental aspects of human energy metabolism under hypoxic conditions.
