This is the first Special Issue of pH. The possibility of dedicating Special Issues to themes of paramount interest to physiologists had been considered when this magazine was in embryo, but it was never translated in action. Then, last year, a series of circumstances somehow imposed the birth of the first Special Issue of pH in the name of Angelo Mosso.
