For the past 40 years, research in Biology has been prevalently focused on questions that could be answered by the reductionist program of genetics. The bottom-up approach – according to which the lowest level, represented by molecules, may explain the development as well as the dynamics of upper levels – had no reason to take into consideration the “logic” of the whole organism.
