The prominent German physiologist Ewald Hering (1834-1918) drew a clear-cut boundary in his Grundzüge der Lehre vom Lichtsinn (1905/1920) between the visual world and visual objects as they are seen (the sphere of Sehwelt and of Sehdinge), and the real world and real objects (the sphere of the wirkliche Welt and of wirklichen Dinge), deeming it to be «an essential prerequisite in order to fully understand the visual perception and its laws» (Hering, 1905/1920).
